We tend to ration our love for God, and the result is that we set boundaries in regard to what we will and won’t do to express our devotion to Him: It’s OK to clap our hands in church, but let’s not go too far. We are afraid: afraid of what others might think, afraid of what God might do if given free rein with our lives, or afraid that our love won’t be reciprocated.

But God’s love knows no boundaries. He doesn’t ration His love for us. “For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

When it comes to loving God, a good rule of thumb is to always err on the side of excess. Moderation is a virtue in regard to things like sugar and television, but it has no place in your “love life” with God.

Throw off restraint in your commitment to Him. Jesus will never greet someone at the gates of heaven, shake His head, and say, “You loved Me too much. You went overboard.”

Today, rid yourself of any boundaries you’ve set with God. Invite Him into your personal space. When you do, He’ll become your dearest friend and ruin you for anything less than radical devotion.

“What marvelous love the Father has extended to us!” (1 John 3:1, MSG)
