We generally associate Scriptures that tell us to seek the Lord with either salvation or supplication (“Seek God, and you will be saved” or “Seek the answer to your prayer”), but we must be careful of limiting these verses.

Of course, it’s good and right to seek the Father when we need something, be it salvation or patience or next month’s rent — but we’re primarily called to seek Someone. We can hardly take hold of salvation without taking hold of the Savior Himself, and let’s not overlook the fact that seeking the Lord doesn’t stop once we’re saved. In fact, salvation should mark the beginning of a lifelong pursuit.

As A. W. Tozer stated, “We have been snared in the coils of a spurious logic which insists that if we have found Him we need no more to seek Him.” God is infinite; if we lived to be a hundred and pursued His presence every day, we’d barely scratch the surface of who He is.

We can always go further and deeper in our journey with Him. The ways we can do this are as numerous and varied as the people on earth; the only sure thing is that striving and struggling should never be a part of seeking God. If we’re gritting our teeth and begging God to show up, we’ve missed the point: He wants to be found. He is as near as your next breath.

This week, take thirty minutes each day to deliberately seek God.

“Happy are those who keep His decrees and seek Him with all their heart” (Ps. 119:2).
