Thursday, May 16, 2019: Isaiah 26:3

“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” Isaiah 26:3

Sometime today when you have a few minutes to spare, find a large space free of obstacles and mark a spot. Standing at least 20 paces directly across from that marked spot, put on a blindfold. Try to walk in a straight line to that marked spot. Or better yet, challenge a coworker or friend to do it and get a good laugh. It’s impossible to walk in a straight line while blindfolded.

Picture Isaiah using the blindfold illustration to make his point in Isaiah 26:3. His blindfolded friend would veer wildly from the course Isaiah set, demonstrating what happens when our eyes are not fixed on the Lord. Isaiah called it the mind “stayed on” the Lord. Whether we call it a mind that is not stayed on the Lord like Isaiah or leaning on our own understanding like Solomon (Prov. 3:5-6), this approach to life is a lot like walking blindfolded.

Instead of fixing our eyes on human wisdom or earthly concerns, we must fix our minds on God. We must pray continually and seek Him. That’s when the blindfold drops. That’s when trust in God is proven. That’s where God’s perfect peace is kept. If you find you’ve been wavering, surrender your blindfold. Give God your full attention and walk toward Him in perfect peace.

  • Personalize the blindfold illustration. What is it that tends to turn your thoughts and focus away from the Lord?
  • Pray: Surrender your “blindfold” to God. Thank Him for His perfect peace, freely and fully given to those who fix their hearts and minds on Him. Ask Him to help you learn to trust Him so much that He is your first, primary, and most constant thought in every situation and circumstance.
