While John the Baptist was in prison awaiting execution, he heard of all the miracles Jesus was doing, so he sent his disciples to confirm that Jesus was actually the One they had been waiting for, the One who would save them from their enemies (Matt. 11:1-6).

Jesus told John’s disciples that, yes, He was the Messiah. He then went on to tell the men of all the miracles He was doing on behalf of the blind, the deaf, and the sick. Amazing things were taking place.

But He was not going to do a miracle for John.

While Jesus could have rescued John from prison, He didn’t. He knew it was the will of the Father for John to remain there, which is why He said to the disciples, “Blessed is the man who does not stumble on account of me” (v. 6, NIV).

In other words, blessed are we when we can give thanks to God even when we don’t get what we want. Blessed are we when we don’t let bitterness, resentment, or self-pity seep into our hearts. Blessed are we when we trust God in the darkest of times, knowing that even then He’s working for our good.

Today, trust that God has you exactly where He wants you, and rejoice in it.
