Wednesday, May 8, 2019: Ephesians 6:18-20

18 “Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.” Ephesians 6:18-20

There are many believers who are carrying heavy burdens. In fact, nearly every person you see at church is dealing with a significant issue of some kind. Many may bring those burdens to church and take them home again, with no one knowing or helping bear the burden.

It was no different for believers in Paul’s day. That’s why after writing about taking up the armor of God to face spiritual battles, he exhorted believers to keep alert and persevere in praying for one another. For himself, Paul asked specifically for others to pray, that he might be bold in his witness. They might not have thought of that need. Paul was a professional evangelist. Plus, he was a bold person by nature and preached the gospel more courageously than anyone they knew. But even Paul knew there were circumstances he would face that might make it difficult for him to boldly proclaim the gospel.

As believers, we are united in purpose and share the responsibility of praying for one another to faithfully serve Christ. There are situations and circumstances we all face that make that difficult. Praying for one another is powerful. It can be life-changing both for individuals prayed for and those who pray. Our intercession gives the encouragement and help we need to faithfully follow Christ, and causes a bonding of love for one another in the process.

  • What effect might we see in our church and community if every believer in Christ was praying for each other to know God’s will, please Him, grow in faith, and be bold in our witness?
  • Pray: Look for opportunities to ask others: How may I pray for you? Or in a group: How may we pray for you? Then pray out loud prayers of intercession right then and there.
