One of the most confusing parts of the story of Lazarus is that when Jesus was told Lazarus was sick, He didn’t rush to the side of His dying friend to help. Instead, He stayed where He was for two more days, during which Lazarus died. Scripture tells us Jesus decided to wait because He loved Lazarus and his two sisters, Mary and Martha (John 11:5-6).

Why would Jesus let Lazarus die out of love for him and his sisters? So He could demonstrate the magnificent glory of God through their situation. Of course, Jesus could have healed Lazarus, but how much greater a miracle that He raised him from the dead! There was no doubt that God was responsible for the miracle that took place.

So often, God lets our circumstances reach the point where they look utterly hopeless so that when He shows up on our behalf, there can be no doubt that it is He who is at work. As Jesus said when He heard of Lazarus’ sickness, “This sickness will not end in death but is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it” (v. 4).

If you’re at rock bottom right now, take heart! God is going to show up in a mighty way on your behalf to display His glory for all to see.

Today, marvel that the Resurrection and the Life holds your destiny in His hands.
