There are words Christians use so frequently that they lose their meaning. One of these is worthy. Consider this: If a picture is blurred, you say it’s blurry. If a road has bumps, it’s bumpy. Because God has worth beyond measure, He’s worthy.

Perhaps you can better relate to this explanation: He’s worthy because He’s worth it — that is, He’s worth whatever it has cost you to follow Him. To say, “Lord, you’re worthy” is to say, “Lord, you’re worth it all.”

Wholeheartedly following God is costly. The believer must lose his life if he wishes to gain Christ (see Matt. 10:39). Discipleship requires one’s heart, money, energy, time, and more. Many believers have lost sleep, security, friendships, and even their reputations while in pursuit of God.

Can you relate? If so, ask yourself, Was He worth it? Is the God-life worth all it has cost me? If your answer is yes, you’re among the most blessed people on earth.

Maybe God is leading you to quit your job and start a business, but your relatives will think you’re foolish and you’ll lose your standing as the sensible one. Perhaps He’s asking you to break off a destructive relationship, but the idea of living a single hour without this person is terrifying. Maybe He’s asking you to take His Word at face value and remain chaste until marriage. Perhaps He’s challenging you to face your sugar addiction head-on.

Today, ask yourself, What will it cost me to follow God where He’s leading? Is He worth it?

“Our Lord and God, You are worthy” (Rev. 4:11).
