If you’re in a season where you don’t have the slightest understanding where God is or what He’s doing, find comfort in Job’s story.

Job had lost everything and was so depressed and confused that he cursed the day he was born. He challenged the Lord’s ways and questioned why a sovereign God would allow such horror in his life. “Why?” Job cried out to God.

“Who is this who obscures My counsel?” God answered (38:2). In other words, “Who is talking with authority about matters he cannot possibly understand?”

God went on to explain to Job that He is the One who commands the morning, walks in the depths of the oceans, and stores the snow in heavenly vaults. He is the One who gives strength to the horse, commands eagles to soar, and makes Leviathan beg for mercy.

God answered Job’s “why” with “Who.”

When you wonder why you’re experiencing the pain you are, take comfort in who God is. Remember that the God who controls the uncontrollable forces of nature and makes even the fiercest beast speak softly to Him, is the same God who orders your steps.

You might never know why He allows certain things to happen, but you can be confident that He knows why, and that everything He allows is for your good.

Today, focus on the “Who” instead of the “why.”

“I know that You can do anything and no plan of Yours can be thwarted. You asked, ‘Who is this who conceals My counsel with ignorance?’ Surely I spoke about things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know” (Job 42:2-3).
