“And the disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit” (Acts 13:52).

When we don’t have a well-rounded knowledge of God, we fear that our lives will become boring and constricted if we completely “sell out” to Him. The idea of seeking Him above and beyond all else conjures images of dull prayer meetings and Scripture memorization. We can’t imagine that pursuing Him could lead to delightful friendships, breathtaking beauty, fulfilling careers, laughter, joy, and contentment.

This isn’t to say that seeking the Giver of life won’t lead to difficulty or sacrifice, because it almost assuredly will—but it will never lead to lifelessness. If our idea of the God-life is one of drudgery and boredom, then we don’t know Him as He wants to be known by His children.

John 10:10 reads, “A thief comes only to steal and to kill and to destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance.” The NLT renders the second half of this verse “My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.”

Today, hold fast to the truth that only your risen Lord can give meaning to your life, and to the thousand daily details that constitute that life. Choose the narrow road and you’ll discover that you, too, can be a disciple “filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.”
